Our Story

How it all started...

Frontier Baptist Church is an old-fashioned, independent Baptist church in Durango, Colorado, committed to growing together in the Lord, reaching the lost with the gospel, and serving Christ with humility and joy. Our pastor, Peter Reitz—born and raised on a Nebraska ranch—was saved at 12, surrendered to full-time service at 16, graduated Bible college at 21, and has pastored in Nebraska, Illinois, and Colorado. He moved to Colorado in 1991 and, by God’s grace, started Frontier Baptist in September 1992. In our early years we met at an 1800s Baptist chapel on County Road 225 and baptized in the Florida River; in 2006 the congregation moved into town when we were offered the Calvary Baptist facility. Pastor Reitz married Belva (from Iowa) in 1982; the Lord has blessed them with five children—one pastors in Grand Junction, three married daughters faithfully serving with their families in their local Baptist churches, and their youngest son has served as Frontier’s associate pastor since 2014 (married in 2020)—and 18 grandchildren.  We’d love to meet you this week—everyone is welcome!
